Retirement or the sale of a business can make this transition visible. It can also unfold more quietly, as children become independent, a relationship changes or we feel a need to live differently.
At times like these, hearing someone describe what they have been through can help us understand our own experience. Their story may put words to an uncertainty, reveal a possibility or encourage us to try something new.
Chapter Beyond seeks to place these life transitions at the heart of its community, bringing together people who are ready to share their experiences and learn from one another.
THE THIRD CHAPTER BEGINS WHEN OUR PRIORITIES SHIFT
At chapter beyond, we suggest looking at life through three chapters:
▸ ROOTS represents what shaped us: childhood, education and our earliest points of reference.
▸ RISE reflects what we have built, both professionally and in our family lives.
▸ RESONANCE marks a time when we seek to make more room for what matters deeply to us.
This third chapter can begin while we are still working, carrying responsibilities and continuing to create. It is marked by a shift in priorities and a desire to make different choices about how we spend our time.
The question becomes more personal: what kind of life do I want to live from here, and with whom?
TRANSITIONS AFFECT MANY PARTS OF OUR LIVES
When an activity ends or changes, it can affect our sense of identity. We were the person others turned to, the one who made decisions and organised things. As that role evolves, what place do we want to find for ourselves? What gives us a sense of being useful today?
Family life calls for other adjustments. When children leave home, we may rethink our role as parents and sometimes rediscover our relationship as a couple. Becoming a grandparent, supporting our own parents or rebuilding a romantic relationship raises questions that each of us approaches with our own history.
Our relationship with time changes too. Regaining freedom can bring the challenge of deciding what to do with it. A difficult experience or a new awareness of our health may lead us to reconsider what we are still putting off. Some relationships grow more distant, while we begin to feel the need to belong to a new circle.
Alongside these questions come others about meaning and what we pass on. What do we want to contribute to? What do we want to share with the generations that follow? What would we still like to explore for ourselves?
A STORY CAN HELP US PUT OUR OWN QUESTIONS INTO WORDS
During a transition, we sometimes know little more than what no longer feels right. What comes next remains difficult to describe.
Listening to someone explain what they missed after leaving a role can help us identify what we are missing ourselves. Was it the pace? The daily conversations? The feeling of mattering to someone? These distinctions can change the way we think about what comes next.
A story can also make a possibility feel more tangible. Someone describes how they built a new circle of friends after moving, found their place through volunteering or started a project with their children. We discover possibilities we might never have considered.
The lives that inspire us may be very different from our own. What moves us in someone’s story also tells us something about our own desires: more freedom, a closer relationship, the pleasure of learning or the opportunity to pass on what we know.
OUR UNCERTAINTIES CAN ALSO HELP OTHERS FIND CLARITY
Someone’s path becomes more illuminating when we understand the steps along the way. How did the decision take shape? What did they have to try? Which commitment did they step away from because it was not the right fit? What constraints influenced their choice?
Sharing these details helps others understand the path that led to a new way of living. A project that started small and evolved along the way can offer an idea that feels more achievable than a change described only through its outcome.
Every story belongs to a particular person, set of circumstances and moment in time. Someone listening may find a question to ask themselves, a conversation to start or a first step to try in their own situation.
Sharing works both ways. By talking about what they have lived through, a member may gain a clearer sense of what mattered to them. A thoughtful question can reveal a desire they had not yet put into words.
CONNECTING THROUGH A PASSION OR A QUESTION ABOUT LIFE
Passions have a real place in this process. They give us a reason to meet and offer a natural starting point for conversation.
A conversation about a trip may lead to a discussion about choosing to live somewhere else. A passion for music can open up a conversation about the pleasure of becoming a beginner again after years of being recognised for our experience.
Two people with different interests may also connect over the same question: how do we bring structure back to our days, maintain our friendships or find a way to contribute that reflects what we want from life now?
Life transitions are the common thread running through Chapter Beyond. Each of us can explore them through a personal question, a passion, a project or the sharing of an experience.
TRUST LETS US SHARE AS MUCH AS FEELS RIGHT
Talking about what we are going through requires the freedom to choose our words and decide what we wish to reveal. Some people will want to share a whole stage of their lives. Others will begin with a question or prefer to listen.
Discretion, confidentiality, kindness and freedom from commercial solicitation are among Chapter Beyond’s principles. They need to be reflected in the way we meet: listening attentively, respecting each person’s boundaries and speaking from personal experience.
A conversation can stay with us long after the meeting. An idea returns, a desire becomes clearer, a discussion continues. Over time, each of us can find something in these exchanges that helps us move forward at our own pace.
OUR EXPERIENCES CAN OPEN UP POSSIBILITIES FOR OTHERS
I believe deeply in the value of what each of us has learned through living. Changes of direction, difficult decisions and personal discoveries can become valuable to others when they speak to a question someone is asking.
Through chapter beyond, we want everyone to be able to share something of their experience and find in others a new perspective, a connection or an idea for what comes next.
Our third chapter is shaped by what we have lived through, what we choose today and what others can still help us discover.
